The US Open Golf Tournament has a long history beginning with the first US Open’s Men’s Championship, which was held on a nine-hole course in Newport, Rhode Island on October 4, 1895. This tournament, which is now held annually in the month of June, once had a wide variety of both professional and amateur players entering and for many of the first years of its existence British golfers dominated the courses. Both professionals and amateurs alike can play in the tournament, provided that they are either exempt, which is the case with many professionals who are either ranked, have won the tournament in recent years or won another one of the major tournaments recently, or they pass a qualifying round.
